GOOD NIGHT, HACKNEY EMPIRE
LAST COURSE: ALADDIN AND HIP HOP

Dienstag, Januar 19th, 2010

Tragic loss, but no news: Hackney Empire will draw its curtain due to financial difficulties this spring. Nicole and I had the chance to attend the pantomime “Aladdin” and a talent show in that impressive venue within one week. Do not do the same horrible mistake to confuse mime artist and pantomime (see wikipedia), you’ll be served the complete opposite of a German “Pantomime”.

The “Borough Shield” contest turned out to be a hip hop and r’n'b driven Hackney variation of X-Factor (DSDS) that called youngsters from various London boroughs to give their best performance. The most thrilling moment was definitely watching the policemen at the entrance supported by security and metal detectors. Later on during the show, wisdom has been spread amongst the viewers. Flyers informed you about the consequences of knife and gun crime:

“You get five years for carrying a gun and one year for every bullet in the gun.” Anyways, all in all we saw great synchronised dancing, listened to mediocre singing and sat in an impressive atmosphere thanks to the glorious architecture and the crazy audience.

SIZE DOES MATTER
GANGSTA DIARIES

Dienstag, Januar 12th, 2010

A Hackney fairy tale:

Two guys leaning against a car. A good looking, filthy rich graphic designer walks home from work through the park and passes that car. All of a sudden one guy wants to play and blocks the path of that young, successful and aspiring lad.

Standing now face to face the guy realises the difference in size only now and says: “Fuck man, you are taller than me! Where have you been?” The wiser lad does not reply but tries to keep this special moment in a scribble later on.

KILL FRAU HOLLE
22. TÜRCHEN

Dienstag, Dezember 22nd, 2009

Snow is great, everyone loves snow. This includes me, I am also a “snow lover”. So, since I am such a big snow lover I did not mind to make an exciting trip to Gatwick Airport and back to Hackney since Frau Holle (Mother Hulda) likes to torture travellers by freezing runways, planes and railways.

COLOGNE CHRISTMAS MARKET
21. TÜRCHEN

Montag, Dezember 21st, 2009

As announced we have finally made it for some Glühwein und Bratwurst to the Christmas Market along the Thames (Waterloo) named after Cologne which made me expect thousands of people and stalls. But it was actually tiny, probably even less stalls than my small Swabian home town Aalen has to offer. Anyways, I have spotted something big at last: one mighty Wurst to rule them all!

OXFORD STREET…NOT!
20. TÜRCHEN

Sonntag, Dezember 20th, 2009

I have successfully avoided Oxford Street/Picadilly Circus this year for Christmas shopping. Thank you www. Instead we had some really tasty Indian food (Clipper!) on Bricklane, less busy less Christmassy. Thanks to two chili peppers I swallowed at once I had a very stubborn company all evening called hiccup.

HACKNEY BEFORE CHRISTMAS
18. TÜRCHEN

Freitag, Dezember 18th, 2009

Basically there are 4 ways how to kill the time till Christmas in Hackney:

1 – gamble outside Eddy’s Cafe
2 – light a fire in cars
3 – watching undelivered Season’s Greetings piling up
4 – taking blurry photos of the very first snow this winter

FESTIVE HACKNEY
6. TÜRCHEN

Sonntag, Dezember 6th, 2009

Christmas is coming closer and closer, also here in Hackney. Witnessed by the light installation along Broadway Market and Mare Street, a huge reindeer projection and the friendly smiling ceiling decoration in the great Turkish restaurant next door.

A WEEKEND OF BELLY PLEASURE
1. TÜRCHEN

Dienstag, Dezember 1st, 2009

Alright, so this is the plan: since my blog had its hibernation in the summertime, I might try to do some kind of an Advent calendar till Christmas. Let’s see how many windows I can actually open before the next phase of blog silence =) A small note: the windows in the German Advent calendar are called “Türchen” (little doors)

I had my very first Thanksgiving Dinner last weekend. One massive turkey has been sacrificed for about 25 people, mainly from North America, a few from the UK and only 3 from “the Continent” including myself. The belly teasing continued on Sunday evening with a great cheese fondue at Andy’s house and some Swiss mates. All in all a perfect opening of the Christmas season.

TOUR DE FRANCE
PART 1

Mittwoch, November 25th, 2009

First time I am faster than anyone else: my review of 2009 (and consequently the resurrection of this blog). My personal 2009 is mainly defined by the best 2 weeks of this year; so this part and the following 2 posts will show only photos from my Tour de France with Nicole. Enjoy.

3 2 1 POLO!
BERLIN IN LONDON

Sonntag, August 9th, 2009

A few impressions from the bike polo tournament of the 1st August weekend. Chris came with his team and Makk all the way from Berlin to mess with the crème de la polo crème and get a sunburn. Sunburn… This blog will have a break – I go on holidays, sweet, sweet summer holidays. Au revoir!

SQUIRREL ATTACK
IN KENSINGTON GARDENS

Dienstag, Juni 30th, 2009

Andy and I have been attacked by pigeons and squirrels on our way to the RCA degree show last weekend. I only had my mobile with me, so a few photos might follow after the 1.000.000 other unseen shots that piled up over the last weeks. Anyway, I’ll be in Germany till Sunday (Maddin my schedule is extremly tight, I will give you a ring when I am in Munich). Meanwhile read why I would love to see the Eurasian Red Squirrels slaughtering the Eastern Gray Squirrels.

ART AND DESIGN

Three little captures from my last days’ stroll. The mosaic seems to be the only non-sexist work.

MEHR BILDER, MEHR ZEIT

Donnerstag, Juni 11th, 2009

Das wär doch was?

DUBLIN
MISSION: TASTE THE BEST GUINNESS EVER

Freitag, Juni 5th, 2009

Guinness is good for me. That’s why I am in Dublin this weekend. This gives me a nice excuse to postpone my Zurich images again. My renewed promise: images from Zurich and Dublin will follow next week and I will start off a new series of collected faces. Well lush! I really hope to revitalize this blog asap! Meanwhile enjoy one of those great Guinness ads.

Mr Peeky
and cat and dog

Montag, Mai 25th, 2009

I just returned from a lovely weekend in the lovely small town Newbury which is a 1 hour ride west of London. The canal, the pubs, the particular pub (the lock?) at the canal, the small shopping street, the Nepalese restaurant, the Scottish mother and even the redneck hippsters in their super sleek Vauxhall (Opel) Corsas – they were ALL lovely. Did I say lovely?

A further note on what happened recently in my extremly exciting over the top life. Ive got 2 tiny bruises on my left index finger thanks to my clumsy attempt to change some razor parts. We gave him a name and a girly make up. I have also been reminded how brilliant cats are, I need to get one very soon to satisfy my deepest needs. The crossed dog poo looked like a little man in a toy’s car.

BEER & CIDER FEST
IN READING

Mittwoch, Mai 6th, 2009

I had a great weekend on the Reading Beer and Cider Fest (West of London) with Nicole and her friends. Supported by the sun, loads and loads of food supplied by Mum and of course billions of various beers and ciders, that day could only turn out to be lovely. My only slight complaint: the longest queue ever (about 300 m), but I guess that’s just another indispensable aspect of a genuine British fest – just like the Morris dancers.

SIZE DOES MATTER
BACK FROM WUERZBURG

Dienstag, Februar 10th, 2009

Things I have learned last weekend at the design exhibition:
I like tankships (photo: Rainer Wengel); I don’t like people ignoring me; I am still able to defeat the former Kicker-champ Flo (with the help of Maddin); you get more to see when you talk less; doing fancy self-made type doesn’t necessarily mean it looks good; I am being stalked on design weblogs; information design requires more than just piling pictograms, generating colourful patterns and/or using the Akkurat-font; I appreciated to see more print projects dealing with information graphics; I don’t like smelly taxidrivers hitting the kerbs at 5.45 am and I cherish Polish hospitality.
